Invigorating growth is critical: When the economy expands, it improves standards of living, promotes innovation and makes households wealthier. Economic growth in Spain and France was stronger than expected last year. But the US is outperforming mainly for one key reason: Robust productivity growth. Productivity growth came in well below expectations in the first three months of the year, according to Labor Department data released last week. A “course correction” isn’t an even stronger US economy: Economic policymakers around the world need to address a range of key issues.

The Fed and economic policy were top of mind this week given the central bank's Wednesday decision to yet again leave interest rates unchanged , as it has since last summer. This week included the conclusion of April's trading month, which marked the first down month of the year for all three major market averages. Indeed, some recent earnings reports have raised doubts about the economy, with brands from McDonald's and Starbucks evidencing signs of strain among consumers. While no new inflation numbers are scheduled for release next week, investors will see reports on March wholesale inventories, March consumer credit and May consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan. AI trade Though interest rates took center stage this week, investors also continued monitoring companies tied to the artificial intelligence boom amid the stocks' recent choppiness.

The three major averages posted gains for the fourth week in row, lifted by strong quarterly earnings results for most of the Big Tech companies and a strong jobs report. Valvoline had last year decided to separate its retail services and global products divisions following a strategic review. Saudi Arabia's state-controlled Aramco on Tuesday announced it is pausing plans to raise its crude production capacity from 12 million barrels per day to 13 million barrels per day. At 7 a.m. London time, Brent crude prices for March delivery were up 0.24% from previous close price at $82.60 per barrel. The Tuesday announcement comes amid mounting concerns over the outlook for oil demand worldwide, given a progressing global transition toward decarbonization that casts a shadow over long-term investment projects in fossil fuels. Global oil demand is projected to have risen by 2.3 million barrels per day in 2023 to 101.7 million barrels per day, according to the International Energy Agency's annual report published in December.

Matt Orton, chief market strategist at Raymond James Investment Management, was the latest to urge investors to "strategically add" to small-cap stocks right now. Tom Ognar, senior portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, said small- and mid-cap stocks look the "most incrementally interesting" among growth stocks. "We're very attuned to the valuation discounts currently being afforded to small- and mid-cap stocks after protracted periods of underperformance relative to large-cap stocks," he said. It screened for the best small-cap stocks to play an economic recovery. RBC Capital Markets also released, in a September note, an updated list of what it called "high conviction" U.S. small-cap growth recommendations.

Investors should see opportunity after Valvoline 's recent sell-off, Wells Fargo said. "VVV is a high quality operator w/ category-leading comps, accelerating unit growth and an asset-light model," he said. While electric vehicles present a long-term risk, "recent underperformance is sharp and we see opportunity." While he noted shares trade 13% above auto service providers, they are below auto part peers, high-growth retailers and restaurants. While Lantz admitted that the rise of electric vehicles creates a risk, Valvoline is in a better position than others.

The protracted fight ultimately ended in an agreement in early August of that year, but it was a choppy summertime ride for investors. Within the portfolio, Wynn Resorts will report Tuesday, after the closing bell, and Disney will report on Wednesday, after the closing bell. "Bottom line – while accelerated EV adoption poses a risk to Valvoline, we think the risk lies further in the future than most would think," Shemesh wrote. Still, the analyst expects further upside from here.
